Kayak Alchemy Retreat 2026
Make paddlers envy how you handle your kayak... without needing special talent or years of practice.
By learning the real principles the Inuit perfected over thousands of years of 'real conditions' practice.

Most paddlers look at your Greenland paddle and think the same thing:

And honestly? They're absolutely right... until you learn what the Inuit actually knew.

The guide couldn’t believe her eyes.

Bruce was setting the pace for the entire group — in conditions that had everyone else white-knuckling their paddles.

While they fought the wind and chop, he moved like he was born on the water. Fluid. Effortless. Almost supernatural.

She’d been guiding for fifteen years and had never seen anything like it.

Mid-trip, she did something she’d never done before: she traded paddles with Bruce, desperate to understand his secret.

Bruce wasn’t naturally gifted. He wasn’t stronger than the others. He didn’t have better reflexes or more experience.

He was using 4,000-year-old techniques that made everything look effortless.

What Bruce discovered changes everything…

Picture this: You’re rock solid gliding through three-foot chop while others around you are having to react and brace to avoid a capsize.

Your paddle slices through the water with surgical precision while theirs slap and splash.

You’re having a conversation while they’re breathing hard.

They watch you calmly paddle through rough water like it’s glass and think: “Some people are just natural athletes.”

“What a difference! This time I’m always at the front of the pack. And for the first time, my arms don’t feel tired and overworked afterwards.” — Sabine

“I’m blown away at how easy it is to paddle into a strong headwind now.” — Gary

“My paddling was forced. Now it’s much easier. And I have a lot more confidence in waves.” — Devi

You don’t look like someone who learned new techniques. You look like someone who was always meant to be on the water.

The struggle disappears.

The tension melts away.

What once felt hard becomes fluid and graceful.

And everyone around you assumes you’re just one of those lucky people who has “the gift.”

Here’s what I’ve discovered after 20 years of teaching this:

You already have that gift. It’s been there all along, waiting beneath years of well-meaning but misguided instruction.

You don’t need to develop new abilities — you need to remember how your body was designed to move.

And it’s never too late to remember.

“Following your advice has kept me paddling at 82 with others 15-20 years younger.” — Dave Fairbrook

The gift isn’t gone.

It’s just been buried.

And it’s time to uncover it.

It's Not About Learning More Techniques — It's About Unlocking Key Principles

Most paddling instruction focuses on collecting a bunch of disconnected techniques. But here’s what I discovered over 20 years of teaching exclusively with the Greenland paddle:

There are a few principles that make you more competent than all the modern techniques you could ever learn.

They’re more like relearning how to move naturally with your kayak.

And when you master them, something remarkable happens: professionals start wanting to understand what you’re doing.

“I’m now able to combine different parts of my body. Before I would wear out one part, then change to another. Now it’s way more integrated and relaxed… no more shoulder pain.” — Mary

1. Learn How to Wear Your Kayak

The Secret: 1 point of fluid connection instead of the modern “6 points of contact” that locks you in place. This enables the natural pelvic rotation and whole-body movement that makes you stable, fast, and agile.

What You’ll Experience: Your kayak feels like a pair of hiking boots — invisible, comfortable, mobile. You’ll get immediate relief from that restricted feeling and discover a sense of flow that makes others wonder what you know that they don’t.

“The way I learned to edge was by creating tension. Now I can hold that edge without tiring. It makes so much sense.” — Dave Lapointe

2. Move Your Whole Body From Your Core

The Secret: Generate power from your core (Dan Tien) and move your body like a whip, not a stick. This creates the speed and efficiency that lets you paddle all day without fatigue.

What You’ll Experience: You feel centered, like movement radiates outward. You have more power and it feels easier. You become the one setting the pace instead of struggling to keep up.

“What a difference! This time I’m always at the front of the pack. And for the first time, my arms don’t feel tired and overworked afterwards.” — Sabine

3. The Alignment Secret

The Secret: The Greenland paddle works best when aligned with your body, further back than most people think — exactly where it provides maximum stability and power.

What You’ll Experience: Instead of paddling where your body is out of alignment for support, you paddle where the paddle gives you stability as you move. You experience staying in balance — like when walking — rather than constantly recovering from being out of balance.

“Changed my paddle stroke a huge amount… gave me that sense of stability I was missing. Way more comfortable paddling the west coast, and finally able to handle the rough stuff.” — Paul Flynne

4. Firm Up the Water (The Lost Art)

The Secret: This is the game-changer most paddlers never learn — making water firm up like pushing against a wall. You avoid wasting energy moving water around. And it allows you to use your paddle to maintain balance without having to stop and brace, without your paddle sinking deep.

What You’ll Experience: When you can firm the water on command, your paddle becomes as reliable as solid ground. This is what makes guides stop and stare — they’ve never seen water support someone like that.

“The biggest change was the idea of ‘firming the paddle’ in the water. I’d never heard it explained that way—and I quickly felt a big difference in efficiency and speed.” — Jennifer Stanton

When You Apply These 4 Principles, Everything Changes:

The Granola Bar Challenge: Useless skill? Or is it key?

Years ago, I made a video of myself eating a granola bar while lying completely relaxed in a balance brace—the same position that Inuit paddler used for napping during long hunts.

At our retreats, students kept talking about that video. So I turned it into a challenge: Master the balance brace, eat the granola bar, join the Hall of Fame.

Students arrive thinking the balance brace is hard…

Then we teach them to stop controlling the kayak… and start wearing it.

And suddenly? They’re lying back on the water. Relaxed. Stable.

Eating a granola bar like those ancient hunters who could nap in their kayaks during long expeditions.

This is when the transformation becomes undeniable.

“I was pretty tippy and felt unstable a lot. Now after the retreat I can find stability throughout my stroke… We had a wide range of skill level here, and everybody had a major breakthrough and had a blast. I would recommend it to anybody at any level.” — David Loeffler

Your 5-Day Transformation Journey

Every Morning:

We start with warm-up, stretching, and mat practice of what we’ll work on that day. Like martial arts, everything builds on the foundation of generating power from your core and releasing it through the paddle.

Day 1: Starts at 3:00pm

On-land demonstration of core power versus moving paddle. We explore where stability shows up in the stroke, and how the Greenland paddle stroke starts where stability shows up (while the Euro paddle stroke ends before stability appears). You learn about balance and body/paddle alignment—the experience of always being in balance, like when walking.

Day 2:

We introduce edging and firming the paddle when you choose. Balance brace and rolling begin (for those who want it). We start building confidence in the paddle’s ability to give support.

Days 3-5:

Building on those foundations—bracing when you go over, edging when turning, sharp turns, going backwards. Everything designed to work beautifully in rough conditions.

Day 6:

Optional group paddle. A chance to practice what you learned and still get feedback.

Most paddlers don’t trust that their paddle can support them. If they start to go over, they don’t use the paddle effectively to stop the capsize. But when you can firm the water, use your core for power, and your paddle is already in the right place—and you trust all that—it becomes second nature to brace and avoid capsizing.

“I absolutely have way more confidence for big waves, winds, currents… conditions that would have terrified me before.” — Sarah Hood

“You have opened another world for me. I like how we blend rolling, bracing and sculling to form a solid set of skills that keep me from panic in unfamiliar, dynamic situations.” — Butch Chase

Dancing with the Sea

About Your Coach

I’m Paulo Ouellet—founder of Dancing with the Sea. I’ve spent over 25 years using the Greenland paddle and 20 years helping paddlers unlock its full potential. My method teaches you to move naturally, with power, grace, and stability—so paddling becomes effortless, even in challenging conditions.

Here Is What People Have To Say

“I was muscling through keeping up with the group. My paddling was stiff, and muscled, and pulling, and now I feel like I can look and the kayak will go where I look. And I can do it gently and it does start to feel like dancing. So I learned to paddle with ease and comfort and I’m less worried about stability. I can now go out by myself.”

Barbara Perkins

“It was a real eye opener to me. I had so many breakthroughs in efficiencies, and how to use the Greenland paddle.”

Willi Prittie

“The way I learned to edge was by creating tension. What I learned here is to edge without tension.

It makes so much sense and now I can hold that edge without tiring so quickly.”

– Dave Lapointe

“I’m now able to combine different parts of my body. Before I would wear out one part, and then change to another.

Now it’s way more integrated and relaxed, and there is no more shoulder pain”

– Mary Maclean

“My paddling was forced. Now it’s much easier. And I have a lot more confidence in waves.

The location is absolutely great”

– Devi Pasad

“I was pretty tippy and felt unstable a lot. Now after the retreat I can find stability throughout my stroke. My core was sore, but my arms don’t get sore and tired now. We had a wide range of skill level here, and everybody had a major breakthrough and had a blast I would recommend it to anybody at any level.”

David Loeffler

“Before it took a lot of force and the boat didn’t turn when I wanted it to turn, and now it’s like it just turns by itself almost.”

Ken Lewis

” this idea of not muscling through keeping up with the group, but . In letting the water firm up and then just tapping a little off of that and flying forward. Working smarter not harder. ”

Kim Costin

“Changed my paddle stroke a huge amount, and provided me with that sense of stability in rough conditions.

Much more comfortable paddling on the west coast, more able to  deal with rough conditions, and can paddle further.”

-Paul Flynne

“I absolutely have way more confidence for big waves, winds, currents… conditions that would have terrified me before.

I can paddle much faster with much less energy.”

-Sarah Hood

“When I first got my new kayak and a Greenland paddle, I felt pretty overwhelmed trying to figure out how to use the paddle properly, especially with the sportier kayak.

Thanks to Paulo’s lessons and programs, I gained a solid foundation for my skills and a boost in confidence on the water. I’m now a much more efficient paddler and feel way more comfortable handling dynamic waters and tricky weather conditions. Paulo’s instructions also made rolling a lot easier.

I’m much more confident on the water and am no longer a fair-weather paddler.

-Asmin Chen

“Following your advice has kept me paddling at 82 with others 15-20 years younger.”

Dave Fairbrook

“I absolutely feel more comfortable and confident in my kayak. I feel I have the skills I need to build on to progress even further with some practice.”

-Karen Thibodeau

“I wanted to find out what the Greenland paddle was all about and how it could improve my paddling.

Now I feel more stable in my boat; I can paddle more comfortably and with more ease.

I have more peace of mind especially with bracing. “

-Delcy McLellan

“I was paddling, on a multi-island adventure, with Sea Kayak Baja Mexico ®, over the Christmas Holiday, in 2018, as a complete beginner.

I saw a Greenland paddle, and insisted upon using it. Well, this choice made me the oddball. Nonetheless, I impressed the two Guides with my ability to (unintentionally) set the pace, whilst never breaking a sweat!

As well, my “bracing” confused the Guides, because I, mostly, didn’t brace, in the normal sense, since, having either Greenland blade in the water, gave me enough purchase, to adjust my balance, before things got out of hand.

On day four, one of the Guides had “had enough”, and she traded paddles with me, in order to satisfy her curiosity! Maria; she seemed to be a bit befuddled, by the way she shot, to the front, with no effort”

-Bruce B.

“What a difference 🙂 This time I was always at the front of the pack!!! and for the first time my arms don’t feel tired and overworked afterwards – but instead I can still feel the movement of my whole body. YEAH :-)”

-Sabine

“The biggest change in my paddle perspective was the notion of “firming the paddle” in the water. Never before had I heard power or pressure applied to the blade explained in this manner. And yet after practice and time on the water, I quickly felt a dramatic difference in efficiency and speed.”

-Jennifer Stanton

"But What If...?" Let's Address Your Concerns

Am I too old to learn this new approach?

This isn’t about learning complicated new techniques—it’s about rediscovering how to move naturally with your whole body. You already know how to walk, how to reach for something, how to shift your weight. We’re simply applying those natural movement patterns to paddling.

We accommodate everyone. The preparation videos help you arrive ready, we have small groups with individual attention, and helpers to support anyone who needs it. Whether you’re struggling with basic strokes or you’re an advanced paddler hitting a plateau, the embodied approach meets you where you are.

“We had a wide range of skill level here, and everybody had a major breakthrough and had a blast. I would recommend it to anybody at any level.” — David Loeffler

This approach is specifically designed to protect your joints. When you generate power from your core instead of muscling with your arms, when your paddle and body are properly aligned, you eliminate the strain that causes injury.

“I’m now able to combine different parts of my body. Before I would wear out one part, then change to another. Now it’s way more integrated and relaxed… no more shoulder pain.” — Mary

“I can tell right away when I’m falling back into my old habits, I can feel the tension in my shoulders.” — Karen

What if I don't have camping gear?

You have several options:

Rent a glamping tent directly from the resort

Book a room at a nearby B&B

Note: You’re responsible for making these arrangements.

you can:

• Cook at the camp kitchen

• Visit the nearby restaurant

• Shop at the grocery store (5-minute walk)

• Enjoy the on-site pub

If you don’t have a kayak, we can arrange a rental for you at an additional cost of $500 for the retreat duration. Please select that option when you purchase if you need this option.

Not everyone will master every skill, and that’s perfectly fine. The balance brace and rolling are available for those interested, but the core principles of embodiment, efficient movement, and water confidence benefit everyone regardless of which specific techniques they pursue.

The transformation often happens faster than you’d expect because we’re not building new skills from scratch—we’re removing the restrictions that were blocking your natural ability.

“It was a real eye opener to me. I had so many breakthroughs in efficiency, and how to use the Greenland paddle.” — Willi Prittie

Pender Island’s protected waters mean we can always find suitable conditions for learning. Plus, part of what you’ll discover is that “rough” conditions become much less intimidating when you have the skills to handle them confidently.

You can also take a ferry from Vancouver. Make sure you have a reservation.

Your Moment of Decision

You’ve been on this journey for a while now. You’ve read the emails, watched the videos, learned about the unique approach that separates confident paddlers from those who struggle.

You know that what you’ve been doing isn’t getting you where you want to be. The tension, the uncertainty in rough water, the feeling that it’s getting harder and won’t last forever — it doesn’t have to be your story anymore.

This is your chance to discover what you’re truly capable of.

Not through grinding out more techniques or pushing through more discomfort, but by rediscovering the natural elegance you already possess.

By learning to wear your kayak instead of fighting it. By moving with the water instead of against it.

The question isn’t whether this works—the results speak for themselves.

The question is: Are you ready to experience what it feels like when paddling becomes as natural as walking?

When your Greenland paddle becomes an advantage instead of something you have to defend?

When rough conditions become opportunities for play instead of sources of anxiety?

When registration opens, you'll have minutes—not hours—to secure your preferred date.

The most useful thing that I have taken from these videos is that torso rotation really starts at the feet and involves the butt & hips more so then twisting at the waist or shoulders. My confidence in conditions and ability to maneuver my kayak is vastly improved.

Instead of controlling the boat your approach is more spiritual. It's different but allowed me more success and enjoyment. Your segment on fitting the kayak changed my not being able to balance brace to success the first time after fitting the kayak. Also made a dramatic difference in success on the forward finishing roll.

It was difficult for me to let go of my Euro paddle techniques and my performance suffered from this. Paulo has opened another world for me with his patient teaching. I like the way the videos blend the use of rolling, bracing and sculling to form a solid set of skills that keep me from panic when I find myself in an unfamiliar, dynamic situation.
